4. Cabling & Wiring

What do we mean with Cabling & Wiring?

A wire is a single conductor to transport electricity or electrical signals. When 2 or more wires are bundled, and an insulation cover is provided, we can speak about a cable. Wires are in several thicknesses and can be a solid copper conductor or a stranded copper conductor. Depending of the purpose, cable can house the same wires or a combination of different wires. Wires can come in different colors or in just one color. Sometimes unicolored wires are numbered, or marked with stripes.

What makes wires & cables so important? Very simple, when the wire, via a connector, does not make a good connection, the connection is useless.

Bundles of wires can cause a lot of confusion, and therefor organization is essential!

Cable and Wire systems, like you see in Industrial Cabinets are the way to organize the bundles of cable and wire. It matters when cable systems, whether or not regulated, are applied. In the current Marine world, NMEA2000 is the system, to organize your infrastructure. Older systems, or propriety systems are surely becoming obsolete.

Spaghetti wiring

Ever seen wiring spaghetti? It tells you how wires and cables are -not- organized, and therefore asking for problems.

Many boats face situations like these. Non-certified people are usually the cause, that wiring systems ends up like this. Finding a problem in a wire-mess is very harsh. A reorganization of any wiring system, who are in a mess is required by marine law. Every boat and ship, has requirements how machinery, equipment and cabling systems should be documented and therefore organized. Please take care of your documentation, and respect the regulations.

It's not only unprofessional and it shows your attitude, how to deal with capital goods. In case of an accident, the boat or ship owner is held accountable.
